50in50: Big Deals
What’s this? I’m trying to blog once a day for 50 days! Inspired by Forking Mad and Lou Plummer.
What do you remember being a big deal to adults during your childhood or teenaged years?
One thing that seemed like a really big deal - in a mostly negative way - to adults when I was a child, was LGBTQ+ issues. It’s always seemed pretty weird to me that anyone would consider same-sex marriage a big deal - especially the party that apparently cares about small government! It was treated as a big, devisive issue-du-jour in my school social studies/government classes. The Lutheran congregation that my family was a part of also got caught up in the ELCA same-sex ordination controversy in 2009-10. It was a big deal to people.
In 2012, I voted for the first time, and one of the issues on the ballot was Minnesota’s legalization of same-sex marriage, which I was happy to vote for - and it ultimately passed!
